In this CHAMPS elementary classroom led by Karlie Baker, an experienced teacher with 8 years of teaching under her belt, the focus is on serving students of all abilities in grades 2nd-6th. Karlie holds a Master's of Education degree in Special Education K-6 from the University of West Alabama, a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education K-12 from Athens State University, and an Associates degree in Social Work from Wallace State Community College. She is well-trained in ABA therapy and has taught both on an elementary and high school level. The classroom follows the CHAMPS program, which encompasses academics, life skills, social skills, and behavior management strategies. The primary goal is to instill "learning to learn" skills among students, emphasizing tasks such as following directions, participating in small group centers, managing time during leisure activities, and adhering to school routines across the campus.
The success of this classroom is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the dedicated team, which includes aides Danna Powell, Emma Gardner, and Jessica Carr. Together, they create a nurturing environment where students receive comprehensive support in their educational and personal development. Miss Baker's teaching approach extends beyond academics, incorporating daily living skills into the curriculum. This includes teaching essential routines like mealtime, bathroom habits, and hygiene practices. Despite the diverse challenges faced on a daily basis, the classroom thrives on providing adaptive, meaningful, and positive support to every child.
Outside of the classroom, Miss Baker enjoys a well-rounded life filled with various interests. She finds joy in beach outings, indulges in reading, and cherishes quality time spent with her family and friends. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Karlie actively contributes to her community as a board member of Flourish of Cullman. Karlie has a sweet little puppy named Mia. On special occasions, Mia is welcomed into the classroom, bringing an extra layer of comfort and joy to both the adults and the students. This personal touch reflects Karlie's commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, extending her love for both education and the well-being of those around her.
